American Discovery Trail Society Annual Meeting

I attended the ADTS Annual Meeting this morning. It was nearby and I love long trails. It’s always so nice to see passionate people doing good work. Highlight? Heading outside to chat trails while we watched the space shuttle Endeavor fly over. Brian Stark and I talked about identifying and contacting private land owners while on long distance hikes. He recently ran into problems on the Oregon Trail. He has the email “runforrestrun”.

CDT Completion Certificates

CDT friends, the new Continental Divide Trail Coalition just started issuing completion certificates for the CDT. I just filled out my application and you should too! They haven’t started accepting members, but their founding paperwork should be done before too long and I’ll be one of the first people to sign up.

Backpacking food plan

This level of planning for a hike is impressive.

This was pulled out of a hiker box at Muir Trail Ranch. I didn’t eat it, but I did have the person’s repackaged Kung Pao Chicken. I think I boiled water and let it sit for a few minutes. 0.333 cups of water??

Half off gear

Backcountry.com has their “Hell Yeah” sale going on right now. Bump up any sale item to 50% off. Looks like entire lines of good ultralight backpacking gear are on sale. Montbell down jackets, Patagonia, Arc’teryx… entire size runs are available too. You’re almost never going to find some of this stuff discounted. Great time to buy!

Cairns: Messengers in Stone book

I just got an email informing me that some of my comments were used in the book Cairns: Messengers in Stone. The author and I spoke at least a year ago. I remember talking fondly about Nepal’s remarkable cairns, the summit cairns in the Grand Canyon, a cairn I built near the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia and the impressively large stacks in the Goat Rocks. We also philosophized about modern cairn building on the PCT.

I flipped through the book a few weeks ago in the outdoor shop in Lone Pine. It must have just come out. I even considered buying it. I didn’t realize that it was the book that I had been interviewed for though.
